UK Tax Year Calculator

About This Calculator

The UK tax year calculator tells you which tax year any date falls in. It opens on today's date, so you can see the current tax year immediately, and you can enter any other date to check it.

The UK personal tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April the following year and is written with both years, such as 2026/27 for 6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027. The unusual start date is a historical quirk dating back to the switch from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar. Note that this is different from the UK government financial year (used for corporation tax and public spending), which runs 1 April to 31 March — this calculator uses the 6 April personal tax year that most people mean by "the tax year".

For any date, the calculator shows the tax year label, its exact start and end dates, how many days into the year the date is, and how many days remain until 5 April. That helps with planning ISA and pension contributions before the deadline, timing income and gains across tax years, and knowing which year a payment or transaction belongs to.

A date on or after 6 April belongs to the tax year starting that April; a date from 6 January to 5 April belongs to the tax year that began the previous April. The calculator handles that boundary for you, and the timezone-safe maths means a date always returns the same tax year.

To use it, read the current tax year on load or pick a date and press Find the financial year. For other countries, see the India financial year, Australian financial year, and US fiscal year calculators.

How It Works

  1. Choose a date (defaults to today).
  2. Click “Find the financial year”.
  3. See which financial year it falls in, the start and end dates, and how far through you are.

Formula & Methodology

The result is worked out as follows:

FY = the year window containing the date; progress = days elapsed ÷ total days

The UK personal tax year is the 6 April – 5 April window containing the date: the year starting this 6 April if the date is on or after 6 April, otherwise the year that started the previous 6 April. Days remaining runs to 5 April.
