Academic Semester Calculator

About This Calculator

The academic semester calculator turns your term's start and end dates into the numbers that actually matter: how long the semester is in weeks, how far through it you are today, and how much is left. Enter the first and last day of term and it does the rest.

Semester lengths vary widely between schools, colleges, and universities, and terms rarely line up with calendar months, so "how many weeks is this semester?" is surprisingly awkward to answer by hand. This calculator counts inclusively — both the first and last day of term are part of the semester — and breaks the total into whole weeks plus any leftover days, which is how academic calendars are usually described.

Alongside the length, it shows the progress: the number of days elapsed, the days and weeks remaining, and the percentage of the term completed. That is useful for pacing coursework and revision, planning assignments across the weeks available, and knowing at a glance whether you are ahead of or behind the midpoint. Before term starts it counts down to the first day; after term ends it shows the full length the semester ran.

Everything is computed privately in your browser and anchored to a timezone-safe date, so the figures are stable and update to today each time you open the page. To use it, enter the term start and end dates and read the result — the headline shows the semester length, with the progress and days remaining just below.

For a pure countdown to the end of term, the semester countdown page leads with the days left; to count the days or weeks between any two dates, the days between dates calculator does that, and the week number calculator gives the ISO week for any date in the term.

How It Works

  1. Enter the term start date.
  2. Enter the term end date.
  3. Click “Show semester progress”.
  4. See the length in weeks, how far along you are, and days left.

Formula & Methodology

The result is worked out as follows:

Length = end − start + 1 day; progress = days elapsed ÷ total; weeks = ⌊total ÷ 7⌋

The semester length is the end date minus the start date, plus one day, because both the first and last day of term count. That total is split into whole weeks (total ÷ 7) plus any leftover days. Progress is days elapsed ÷ total days; days remaining runs from today to the last day of term.
