In India the financial year runs from 1 April to 31 March, so the current FY depends on the month. From April through December we are in the financial year that started this April; in January, February, and March we are still in the financial year that began the previous April, right up until it ends on 31 March. The calculator applies that rule for you, so you never have to second-guess the boundary around the new year.

Knowing the current financial year — and how much of it is left — matters for tax-saving investments, spending against an annual budget, hitting sales or savings targets before year-end, and getting paperwork filed in the right year. The days-remaining figure doubles as a gentle countdown to 31 March.
